13.00 - 14.00What students need to know for university study: challenges in English for Academic Purposes - Martin Hewings

The growth of English as the global academic language has led to an increased demand for courses and materials which prepare students for the particular requirements of study and work in English-medium higher education. In this talk I will discuss some of the challenges facing EAP students, including coping with the difficulties of authentic academic speech and writing, understanding disciplinary difference, and finding a ‘voice’ in their own academic language. I will go on to consider how students can be helped to overcome these challenges, with illustrations taken from the recently published Cambridge Academic English course.

Martin Hewings has taught English for over 30 years in many countries, including Sweden, Italy, Malaysia and Australia.

Since 1985 he has taught English for Academic Purposes at the University of Birmingham.

He has published a number of textbooks with Cambridge University Press, including Advanced Grammar in Use, English Pronunciation in Use Advanced, Pronunciation Practice Activities, Cambridge Grammar for CAE and Proficiency and is co-author of Cambridge Academic English

14.30 - 15.30 - Blended Learning – Innovation in teaching from Cambridge University Press Duncan Christelow

The presentation will begin with an overview of blended learning as a concept, examining both benefits and pitfalls from the student and teacher perspectives. It will outline the common features of learning management systems, before reviewing the Cambridge University Press portfolio.
The main focus of the session will be on Touchstone Blended Learning. Touchstone is a multi-level general English course that takes a truly unique approach to blended learning by offering the teacher complete flexibility with the mix of classroom delivery and online self-study. The session will illustrate the pedagogical design of Touchstone Blended, and there will be an explanation of how Touchstone teaches skills. The use of the latest Web 2.0 technology to promote an interactive learning environment will also be covered, as will the reporting and grading functionality within the system.
Duncan Christelow has extensive commercial experience in electronic publishing, especially in the education sector, having started his career with one of the industry's early innovators - Chadwyck-Healey, in Cambridge UK, in 1989.

Since that time he has worked on successive ground-breaking projects such as ProQuest's Literature Online and Encyclopaedia Britannica's Britannica.com.

In 2008 Duncan joined Cambridge University Press ELT, where his role is to promote the successful implementation of online and blended language learning programmes throughout Europe and Asia.
