10:00 - 11:20 Successful whole-class teaching: managing the unmanageable?

In a class of way over 20 young learners with limited attention span and excessive energy the teacher needs to find a way to persuade all students to follow her plan. To achieve this aim she has to create an educational context that provides cognitively adequate instruction, sufficient inspiration and enjoyment.

In this session we are going to investigate effective techniques of storytelling, using role plays, arts and crafts and various games in a big group of learners with different levels of maturity. We will look at the teacher as a manager and a guide helping children cope with the tasks. We will see English education in the lower primary sector as an exciting walk through a jungle with young explorers eager to absorb knowledge and have lots of fun on he way.

11:40 - 13:00 Towards 'sprawdzian szóstoklasisty' - cognitive and linguistic development in action

Upper primary classroom is a place where little explorers evolve into critical thinkers. Tasks in all subjects become more demanding and engage higher level mental processes including perception, deduction and visual literacy. English is no exception. Students are required to deal with fairly complex mental challenges and, additionally, do so in a foreign language. And they are going to be tested on it all at the end of grade six …

In this session we are going to focus on the types of skills that need to be developed at this level, taking into account the upcoming sprawdzian szóstoklasisty. We will discuss the ways in which teachers can support students' linguistic progress in a slow but consistent manner. We'll also look at different techniques that help learners activate their mental potential in order to improve their learning and performance, both in class and in the exam room.

13:30 - 14:50 Texts and contexts in teaching towards writing in the new 'matura'

Texts understood as passages of written language gain significantly in importance at the new matura 2015. Linguistic and rhetoric aspects of text such as cohesion, coherence and intention are now a lot more prominent in the modified assessment criteria. It is thus the teacher's task to draw students' attention to text in order to educate critical readers and skilled writers, for the exam and beyond.

This session will look at ways in which we can help lyceum students develop their text-related abilities. We’ll consider several samples of authentic students' writings in order to identify strong points as well as typical problem areas. Based on this, I’ll offer some techniques for how to help new matura candidates write their own texts with good internal structure, logic and overall linguistic quality.
