10:00 - 11:20 Sesja dla nauczycieli klas 4-6 -Teaching and exam preparation - a SOUND approach.

Having spent three years in the secure world of early language learning, our students inevitably move on to the second stage of formal education. Here, the new focus on knowledge acquisition often overshadows the importance of developing the students’ language skills. And the most primary of all is the listening skill. Long lists of random words and grammar rules learnt by heart will prove useless without the basic prerequisite of communication - the ability to understand.

In this session, we are going to focus on ways in which we can help our students get ready for their big test without forgetting to develop the most important skills and key competences, especially receptive vocabulary, functional language and above all, listening skills. We’ll look carefully at what we should teach children to make sure they will cope with the school-leaving exam and acquire language with which they can handle basic communication.

11:40 - 12:50 Sesja dla nauczycieli gimnazjum - Order, order! The teacher in the world of teenagers.

Life is hard when you are thirteen. Parents are a nuisance, you constantly argue with your boyfriend, hormones take your mind off learning, and generally nobody understands you. Least of all the teacher. Now, imagine a whole bunch of the like, sitting in a classroom and planning how to destroy the world. Amidst this utter chaos, the teacher can be either the worst enemy or the sole constant point of reference. S/He can be the only one who has the power to introduce some order into students' knowledge. To accomplish this task, however, the teacher needs an ally - a well structured action plan.

In this session, we are going to explore the ways in which we can draw students' attention to a given teaching point and maintain their interest long enough to convey our message. We will see how to set small but frequent achievable goals for students who live in the hear-and-now without being bothered by the final exam in the distant future. In the world of chaos, order is the most wanted rarity. If we play our cards well, we may be lucky enough to equip our students with sufficient language tools to enable them to survive in English – at school and beyond.

12:50 - 13:10 Przerwa / rejestracja uczestników

13:10 - 14:30 Sesja dla nauczycieli liceum - Matura 2015 Update. Tips & Insights. Tuning up competent students - the challenge of speaking in high school.

Everyone who has tried learning a new language must have experienced this frustrating moment of being able to understand most of the conversation but having painfully inadequate language skill to contribute. This is the feeling that our students have to cope with on a daily basis. Their level of comprehension largely surpasses their speaking abilities. Although we expect them to represent an intermediate-ish level of competence, the discrepancy between reception and production can reach even three levels!

How do we conduct an intermediate level lesson where the readings are ridiculously easy and speaking is a formidable challenge? How can we maintain students' motivation when they are bored by the text and defeated by a simple conversation task?

Solving this puzzle is the main goal of this session. We are going to scrutinize the lesson in search for every opportunity to help our students, step by step, to construct simple communicative utterances. We will focus on developing their confidence to participate in conversations. We will look at ways of equipping students with ideas to express, language to convey them in, and structure to make sense, in order to help students communicate, disagree and argue in real life and at the matura exam. In short, we will see what we can do to help them speak their mind in English.
